Team of Indian Doctors Arrives SUMAS for Two-Week Free Medical and Surgical Outreach

The State University of Medical and Applied Sciences (SUMAS), Igbo-Eno, has received a team of highly experienced Indian medical doctors for a two-week free medical and surgical outreach aimed at improving access to quality healthcare for the people of Enugu State and its environs. The medical mission is being carried out under the auspices of the Rotary Foundation of Rotary International, in collaboration with SUMAS and the Enugu State Government.
The arrival of the medical team marks a major milestone in SUMAS’ commitment to community service, global partnership, and practical medical training. The visiting doctors, who are specialists in various fields including general surgery, orthopedics, ophthalmology, and internal medicine, will provide free consultations, surgeries, and follow-up care to hundreds of patients during the outreach.
Speaking at the official reception, the Vice-Chancellor of SUMAS, Prof. James C. Ogbonna, described the programme as a historic intervention that aligns perfectly with the university’s mandate as a medical and applied sciences institution. He noted that the presence of the Indian medical team not only brings lifesaving services to the people but also creates a rare opportunity for knowledge exchange between international experts and SUMAS staff and students.
“This outreach reflects the vision of SUMAS as a university that goes beyond the classroom to touch lives directly. Our students and resident doctors will learn firsthand from global experts while our host communities receive quality healthcare at no cost. We are deeply grateful to the Rotary Foundation for this partnership and to the Enugu State Government for its unwavering support,” the Vice-Chancellor said.
The Vice-Chancellor also expressed profound appreciation to His Excellency, the Governor of Enugu State, Barr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, for his consistent investment in the health and education sectors, noting that the enabling environment created by the state government made the outreach possible. He reaffirmed SUMAS’ readiness to continue working with both local and international partners to advance healthcare delivery, research, and training in the state.
Representatives of the Rotary Foundation highlighted that the outreach is part of Rotary International’s global humanitarian mission to promote peace, health, and development, and commended SUMAS for providing the facilities and professional support required for a successful programme.
The two-week exercise is expected to significantly reduce the burden of untreated medical conditions in the region while further positioning SUMAS as a centre of excellence for medical training, community service, and international collaboration. Members of the host communities have already begun to troop into the university’s medical facilities, expressing gratitude for the rare opportunity to receive free, high-quality medical and surgical care.
With this initiative, SUMAS continues to strengthen its reputation as a people-oriented institution committed to service, innovation, and impactful partnerships for the benefit of Enugu State and Nigeria at large.
