Officials of the National Universities Commission (NUC) have arrived at the State University of Medical and Applied Sciences (SUMAS), Igbo-Eno, Enugu State, for a resource verification exercise for six proposed academic programmes.
The programmes undergoing verification are Dentistry, Dental Therapy, Dental Technology, Pharmacology, Prosthetics and Orthotics, and Optometry.
The NUC resource verification exercise is a major step in the process of establishing and commencing new academic programmes in Nigerian universities. It is designed to assess the university’s preparedness and ensure that the proposed programmes meet the required standards in terms of academic staff, infrastructure, equipment, laboratories, library resources and other essential facilities.
The visiting NUC officials were received by the Vice-Chancellor of SUMAS, Prof. James Chukwuma Ogbonna (FAS), alongside members of the University Management and other principal officers.
Speaking on the exercise, the University Management expressed optimism about the visit, noting that the proposed programmes align with the vision of SUMAS as a specialised university committed to producing highly skilled professionals in medicine, health sciences, applied sciences and related fields.
The University has made available relevant facilities, equipment, academic resources and supporting documents for inspection by the NUC team. The exercise will also provide an opportunity for the Commission to interact with academic and technical staff as well as inspect facilities designated for the proposed programmes.
The inclusion of Dentistry, Dental Therapy, Dental Technology, Pharmacology, Prosthetics and Orthotics, and Optometry is expected to further expand the academic offerings of SUMAS and strengthen its contribution to healthcare manpower development in Enugu State and Nigeria.
The University Management reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining high academic standards and complying fully with the regulatory requirements of the National Universities Commission.
The resource verification exercise is therefore regarded as another significant milestone in SUMAS’s continuous development as a specialised institution dedicated to excellence in medical, health and applied sciences education.
The University community looks forward to a successful exercise and the eventual approval of the six programmes by the National Universities Commission.
