NUC Accreditation Team Arrives SUMAS for Assessment of Doctor of Physiotherapy Programme

The State University of Medical and Applied Sciences (SUMAS), Igbo-Eno, has received the National Universities Commission (NUC) accreditation team for the Doctor of Physiotherapy programme. The visit marks a major step toward securing full accreditation for the programme and strengthening the university’s commitment to academic excellence in medical and allied health sciences.

The NUC delegation, comprising experts and resource persons in physiotherapy, arrived at the university on Thursday, October 31, 2025, to assess facilities, curriculum, staffing, and learning resources available for the programme. The exercise is part of the NUC’s ongoing efforts to ensure that Nigerian universities maintain high standards in teaching, research, and professional training.

Welcoming the team, the Vice-Chancellor of SUMAS, Professor James Ogbonna, expressed the university’s readiness for the accreditation process, noting that SUMAS has continued to invest heavily in infrastructure, human resources, and modern teaching equipment to support its health-related programmes.

He stated, “We are delighted to welcome the NUC accreditation team to SUMAS. The Doctor of Physiotherapy programme is one of our flagship courses designed to produce competent, research-driven, and patient-centered physiotherapists who will contribute meaningfully to Nigeria’s healthcare system.”

The Registrar, Dr. Anselem U. Onah, and other principal officers of the university were also on ground to receive the team. The delegation later proceeded to inspect libraries, lecture halls, laboratories, clinical training facilities, and other relevant units of the institution.

Speaking on behalf of the NUC team, the leader, Prof. Christopher Olusanjo Akosile, commended the university management for its preparedness and the quality of facilities already in place. He emphasized that accreditation remains a key quality assurance mechanism aimed at promoting excellence and continuous improvement in the nation’s university system.

The visit is expected to conclude with an exit meeting where the team will present its preliminary findings and recommendations to the university management.

With the anticipated success of the exercise, SUMAS is set to further consolidate its position as one of Nigeria’s emerging centers of excellence in medical and allied health sciences education.
