SUMAS TO PARTNER WITH DNALC NIGERIA TO LAUNCH STEM EDUCATION AND RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT

The DNA Learning Centre has proposed to collaborate with SUMAS in the promotion of STEM education and research development in Enugu State. The management team of NDA Learning Centre Nigeria, led by the Director, Prof George Ude during a courtesy visit to SUMAS on the 10th of January, 2024, made this proposal at the Vice-Chancellor’s office.

The team was well received by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. James C. Ogbonna, and his other principal officers. While welcoming the team, the VC stated that the visit by the NDALC shows their commitment to contributing to the growth of STEM education in Enugu State and in Nigeria as a whole. He further commended Prof. Ude for his significant milestones and contributions to human capacity development despite his international standing. He promised the team that SUMAS is ready to encourage any serious venture that is making significant contributions to human capacity and development in Nigeria.

Speaking further, the VC expressed willingness to collaborate with DNALC Nigeria, acknowledging potential economic challenges and proposing joint efforts to secure sponsorships for research opportunities.

In an optimistic mood, Prof. Ude congratulated SUMAS on its development plan and initiatives and emphasized remarkable chances of championing groundbreaking projects. Prof. Ude highlighted the significance of DNALC and as the only specialized DNA center in Africa, will contribute significantly in providing training for biologists and undergraduate students.

He stated further “this collaboration will ensure students gain practical skills, including hands-on experiences in human genetics, DNA fingerprinting, disease control and microbiome, aligning with goals of bridging the knowledge gap between locally and internationally trained scholars.

The Assistant Director DNALC, Mr. Michael Okoro, who is a product of hands-on learning while contributing during the visit, encouraged SUMAS to utilize the opportunity for students to gain firsthand experience with global standard.

Highlights of the visit include the presentation of Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two institutions, presentation of gift to the Vice-Chancellor SUMAS and tour round SUMAS facilities.
