State University of Medical and Applied Sciences (SUMAS) has commenced a four-day Outcome-Based Education (OBE) Implementors Training for its academic and technical staff of the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment. The training which is facilitated by the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), is part of its efforts to strengthen engineering education and align teaching practices with global best standards.
The training programme, which runs from 9th to 12th June, 2026, is themed “Strengthening Engineering Education through Outcome-Based Learning, Quality Assurance and Continuous Improvement.” The initiative is designed to equip participants with the knowledge and practical skills required for the effective implementation of Outcome-Based Education, a student-centred approach that focuses on measurable learning outcomes, industry relevance, and continuous quality enhancement.
While highlighting the importance of the training, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Jame C. Ogbonna emphasized that the training is a strategic step towards advancing excellence in engineering education and ensuring that graduates of the university possess the competencies, practical skills, and innovative mindset required to thrive in today’s rapidly evolving technological environment.
The programme aligns with the visionary educational reforms of the Executive Governor of Enugu State, Barr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, particularly his commitment to experiential learning, innovation-driven education, and the development of a workforce equipped to meet contemporary industry demands. Through experiential learning, students are encouraged to acquire hands-on experience, problem-solving abilities, and entrepreneurial skills that prepare them for real-world challenges.
Participants in the training are expected to engage in intensive sessions covering key areas such as curriculum design based on Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs), Programme Educational Objectives (PEOs), Programme Outcomes (POs), Programme Specific Outcomes (PSOs), Key Performance Indicator (KPI), quality assurance frameworks, assessment strategies, accreditation requirements, continuous programme improvement, and the integration of practical and industry-based learning experiences into engineering education.
According to the Dean of the Faculty, Engr. Prof. Felix U. Asoiro, the training underscores SUMAS’ commitment to producing globally competitive engineers, architects, and built environment professionals capable of contributing meaningfully to national development and technological advancement.
The Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment noted that the implementation of Outcome-Based Education is critical to achieving international standards in engineering training and will further position the Faculty as a centre of excellence for innovative teaching, research, and professional development.
As the training progresses, participants are expected to develop actionable strategies that will enhance teaching effectiveness, improve student learning outcomes, strengthen accreditation readiness, and foster a culture of continuous improvement across all departments within the Faculty.
The Outcome-Based Education Implementors Training marks another milestone in SUMAS’ pursuit of academic excellence and its unwavering commitment to supporting the Enugu State Government’s vision of transforming education through practical, skills-oriented, student-centered and industry-responsive learning.
