HISTORIC MILESTONE FOR ENUGU: SUMAS COLLEGE OF MEDICINE RECEIVES FULL ACCREDITATION FROM MDCN
Admission Quota Doubled to 100 as Institution Rises to National Prominence
Igbo-Eno Enugu State, June 8, 2024
In a major boost to medical education and healthcare development in Enugu State and beyond, the State University of Medical and Applied Sciences (SUMAS), located in Igbo-Eno, has officially received full accreditation for its College of Medicine from the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN). The groundbreaking announcement followed a thorough accreditation exercise conducted by the MDCN team on June 7, 2024.
With this accreditation, students of the College of Medicine at SUMAS are now eligible to proceed with their Second MB examinations and, most significantly, can graduate and be licensed as medical professionals in Nigeria. The MDCN also increased the medical school’s admission quota from 50 to 100, a decision widely praised as timely and reflective of the institution’s growing capacity and infrastructural readiness.
The development marks a major milestone not only for SUMAS but also for the broader healthcare aspirations of Enugu State and Nigeria. The accreditation positions SUMAS among the ranks of Nigeria’s fully recognized medical institutions, capable of producing qualified doctors to serve in both local and international contexts.
The accreditation milestone has been widely attributed to the visionary leadership of the Executive Governor of Enugu State, His Excellency Barr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah. Since taking office, Governor Mbah has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to transforming education in the state, and this success stands as a testament to those efforts.
Notably, the Mbah administration allocated 30% of the 2024 state budget to education, a move that many described as ambitious but necessary.
We thank the MDCN for their trust in our institution. We also extend our heartfelt gratitude to Governor Mbah, whose visionary policies continue to pave the way for enduring educational reforms.
With the increased student quota and full accreditation, SUMAS College of Medicine is set to become a major hub for medical education in the southeast region. The institution is already in discussions to expand its clinical training programs, establish teaching hospital partnerships, and attract top talent from within and outside Nigeria.
As the state celebrates this achievement, it is clear that Enugu is not just building institutions it is building the future.
Congratulations to SUMAS and to Enugu State.
