SUMAS College of Medicine Holds Inaugural Academic Board Meeting

The State University of Medical and Applied Sciences (SUMAS), Igbo-Eno, Enugu State, reached another significant milestone in its journey towards academic excellence as the College of Medicine successfully held its Inaugural Academic Board Meeting on Tuesday, June 16, 2026.
The historic meeting marked the formal commencement of the College Academic Board, a critical academic governance body responsible for shaping policies, strengthening academic standards, and advancing the College’s vision of producing highly competent, innovative, and globally competitive medical professionals.
Presided over by the Provost of the College of Medicine, Professor Ignatius Ikem Ozor, the meeting brought together principal officers of the College, Heads of Departments, professors, and other members of the Academic Board to deliberate on key issues relating to the growth and development of the College.
In his remarks, Professor Ozor described the inaugural meeting as a defining moment in the history of the College of Medicine, noting that the establishment of the Academic Board represents another strategic step towards institutionalizing excellence, accountability, and quality assurance in medical education at SUMAS.
He commended the visionary leadership of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor James Chukwuma Ogbonna, for his unwavering commitment to building a world-class medical institution equipped with modern facilities, competent faculty, and a learner-centered academic environment.
Professor Ozor emphasized that the College remains committed to implementing best global practices in medical education, research, innovation, and community service, while ensuring that all academic programmes continue to meet the standards prescribed by relevant regulatory and professional bodies.
During the meeting, members deliberated on a number of important academic matters, including curriculum implementation, quality assurance mechanisms, student academic affairs, examination processes, research development, and strategic initiatives aimed at strengthening teaching, learning, and continuous improvement within the College.
The Academic Board also reaffirmed its commitment to fostering collaboration among departments, promoting academic integrity, encouraging research excellence, and creating an enabling environment that supports innovation and professional development.
