NUC Grants Full Accreditation to 15 Academic Programmes at SUMAS
The National Universities Commission (NUC) has officially granted accreditation to all the fifteen academic programmes due for accreditation at the State University of Medical and Applied Sciences (SUMAS), Igbo-Eno, following its comprehensive and rigorous accreditation evaluation exercise conducted between October 28 and December 3, 2025.
The accreditation comes after an intensive evaluation process during which NUC panels conducted a detailed assessment of academic standards, staffing quality, infrastructure, laboratory facilities, library resources, and overall institutional readiness across the affected departments.
The programmes that have successfully secured accreditation include
- Doctor of Physiotherapy
- Human Anatomy
- Human Physiology
- Medical Laboratory Science
- Nursing Science
- Human Nutrition and Dietetics
- Radiography and Radiation Science
- Computer Science
- Information and Communication Technology
- Architecture
- Doctor of Pharmacy
- Applied Microbiology and Brewing
- Biochemistry
- Genetics and Biotechnology
- Pure and Industrial Chemistry
This milestone marks a significant achievement for SUMAS, reinforcing its growing reputation as a center of excellence in medical and applied sciences education in Nigeria.
Reacting to the development, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. James C. Ogbonna, expressed profound gratitude to the NUC for the thorough and transparent accreditation process. He commended the dedication and resilience of the university’s management, staff, and students, whose collective efforts contributed to the success recorded.
According to him, “The accreditation of these programmes is a strong validation of our commitment to quality education, academic excellence, and global best practices. We remain committed to sustaining and improving on these standards.”
The Director of Academic Planning, Prof Jerry Ugwuanyi, also lauded the teamwork and professionalism demonstrated throughout the exercise, noting that the university community approached the process with determination and confidence.
The accreditation outcome not only affirms the quality of teaching and research at SUMAS but also positions the institution to attract more students, partnerships, and opportunities within and beyond Nigeria.
The other programmes are due for accreditation this year and we are ready, eagerly waiting for the National Universities Commission to schedule the accreditation exercises. It is also important to note that the various professional bodies (The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, The Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria, The Pharmacy Council of Nigeria, The Radiographers Registration Board of Nigeria, The Medical Rehabilitation Therapist Board of Nigeria, and The Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria) have all successfully conducted their resource verification exercises, were satisfied with the level of infrastructural development and staffing, approved the running of the programmes and increased admission quotas to our programmes. The Radiographers Registration Board of Nigeria have already conducted and given accreditation to our Radiography programme while the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria has granted accreditation for our first professional examination. We are eagerly waiting for other professional bodies to schedule visits for accreditation exercises of their programmes.
With these developments, SUMAS strengthens its footing in Nigeria’s higher education landscape, signaling a promising future for its academic programmes and graduates.
