NELFUND Engages SUMAS Students on Interest-Free Loan Scheme

Igbo-Eno, Nigeria – February 12, 2025

In a significant stride toward removing financial hurdles in higher education, the Nigeria Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) brought its nationwide awareness campaign to the State University of Medical and Applied Sciences (SUMAS), Igbo-Eno. The outreach, held on February 12th, focused on enlightening students about the Federal Government’s interest-free loan program designed to ensure that no Nigerian student is denied education due to lack of funds.

The sensitization program, hosted within the SUMAS campus, was part of NELFUND’s ongoing nationwide initiative to educate tertiary-level students on how to benefit from the interest-free student loan scheme. The scheme, a major federal intervention, is intended to create equal opportunities for students by offering financial assistance without the burden of accruing interest over time.

The session commenced with an introduction from the visiting NELFUND delegation, who explained the core objectives behind the scheme. The representatives gave a comprehensive breakdown of the loan’s eligibility criteria, application process, documentation requirements, and repayment plan, emphasizing the government’s dedication to making education more accessible for all Nigerians.

According to the NELFUND team, the loan was crafted to alleviate financial stress on students and their families, especially in the face of rising economic challenges. By eliminating interest charges, the scheme allows students to focus on their academic goals without worrying about immediate repayment or long-term debt accumulation.

“Education is a fundamental right, not a privilege,” one of the NELFUND officials stated. “Through this initiative, we aim to ensure that financial difficulty is not a reason any Nigerian student should drop out or be unable to access tertiary education.

Following the informative session, an interactive Question & Answer segment provided a platform for students to engage directly with NELFUND officials. Many students voiced their concerns regarding the perceived complexity of the application process, potential disbursement delays, and the documentation required to access the loan.

The representatives responded patiently to each inquiry, offering step-by-step guidance and clarifying areas that had previously caused confusion. They also reassured students that the fund had improved its digital platforms and backend systems to make the application process more seamless and user-friendly.

One student expressed frustration about encountering delays in verification. The NELFUND team acknowledged the issue and promised to relay feedback to the appropriate channels, while also encouraging students to ensure accuracy and completeness when submitting their applications.

In a gesture aimed at motivating wider participation, NELFUND gifted branded items to students who had already successfully applied for the loan and begun receiving disbursements. These students were celebrated as pioneers of the program and were encouraged to serve as ambassadors within the SUMAS community by assisting their peers through the process.

The presence of these beneficiaries added credibility to the session, as their testimonies of receiving support helped boost confidence among hesitant students.

Registrar of SUMAS, Dr. Anselem Onah, who was also present at the event, lauded the federal initiative and commended the NELFUND team for their commitment to student welfare. In his address, he reiterated the university’s readiness to support all eligible students in navigating the application process.

Dr. Onah emphasized that students who carefully follow the guidelines and meet the necessary requirements would be assured of inclusion in the final list of approved beneficiaries. He also encouraged students to take full advantage of the opportunity, calling it a “game-changer” for education access in Nigeria.

“The university stands firmly behind our students,” he said. “We are working closely with the fund to ensure that no one is left behind due to a lack of awareness or procedural challenges.”

The outreach program at SUMAS marks yet another milestone in NELFUND’s broader mission to democratize access to tertiary education funding across Nigeria. The team expressed their intention to continue similar visits to institutions nationwide, ensuring that students everywhere understand and can access this transformative opportunity.

As the event concluded, many students expressed appreciation for the engagement and left with a renewed sense of hope and motivation. With better access to financial resources, more Nigerian students can now focus on achieving academic excellence and contributing meaningfully to the nation’s development.
