Practical Pharmacology I

Experiments to illustrate pharmacological action of drugs covered in PHA 353 and PHA 354: Introduction to pharmacological lab. Equipment’s used in pharmacological lab. Physiological salt solutions, Serial dilutions, dose calculation and the use of stock solutions. Use of animals in drug experiments; common animals used in drug evaluations, their behavior, animal handling and care. Blood sample collection techniques in laboratory animals, euthanasia method and use of anesthesia. Use of animal restraints. Humane animal sacrifice. Comparative effects of different routes of drug administration. Introduction to bioassay; principles, error and applications. Isolated tissue experiments. Dose response relationships (DRR). Determination of medium effective dose (ED50), medium lethal dose (ED50) and therapeutic index.  Effect of neuromuscular blocking agents using day old chicks.
