Fluid Mechanics II

Flow measurements – pitot and pitot static tubes, orifices, nozzles, venturimeter, weirs and notches; rotameter.  Errors in measurement with flow meters.  Laminar and turbulent flows, velocity distributions, Laminar flow between parallel plates and through circular tubes.  Boundary layers separation, lift and drag.  Stream function, velocity potential and application to flow nets.  Curved flow; equation for radial pressure variation, radial flow, free vortex flow, forced vortex flow.  Dimensional analysis: Philosophy (introduction, Physical dimensions, dimensional homogeneity), methods of dimensional analysis, Similitude, Applications.  Steady and unsteady flow in closed conduits, including pipeline analysis: pipe network, branching pipes, Hardy cross – method of pipe network analysis.
