CHM 411

Advanced Physical Chemistry I

(Pre-requisite: CHM 311)

Statistical Mechanics: The nature of the problem, Microstates and randomness Boltzmann statistics, Partition functions. The relationship between the partition functions and the various thermodynamic quantities (internal energy E, enthalpy H, Gibbs Free Energy G, Entropy S etc). Some applications of statistical thermodynamics – the heat capacity of uses, liquids, solids. Calculation of equilibrium constants, Statistical thermodynamics of monatomic solids; introduction to Fermi-Dirac, Bose-Enstein statistics; Electrochemistry II: Detailed treatment of the Debye-Hyckel theory and the Debye Huckel-Onsan equation.
